Amazon announced October 2 that its Built Together program will add more than $1 billion over five years for U.S. communities hosting its data centers, with spending directed to education, workforce training, energy affordability and local priorities.

A response to infrastructure backlash

AWS CEO Matt Garman also said Amazon no longer uses nondisclosure agreements with government agencies on data-center projects. The company’s new Data Center Commitment covers community engagement, energy and water disclosures, grid investments and Tier 4-equivalent backup generators at new sites.

Amazon presents the program as a response to opposition and more than 100 proposed data-center moratoriums. TechCrunch independently reported the NDA change while noting broader criticism over electricity prices and emissions. Amazon’s resource-use and community-benefit figures remain company claims.
