OpenAI and Synopsys announced a multi-year partnership on September 30 to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model intended to operate Synopsys electronic-design automation tools across semiconductor-design workflows.

Licensing and shared economics

Under the agreement, OpenAI will license Synopsys tools for model development. The companies describe joint research, go-to-market work, and a revenue-sharing framework when customers use the product. Reuters separately reported that OpenAI will pay a training subscription fee and that revenue will be shared based on the model's contribution to chip-design work.

A development agreement, not a finished benchmark

The partners say traditional Synopsys verification tools will continue checking design physics and sign-off. They also say customer-specific design data will be encrypted and not used to train the model. Those security and productivity statements are commitments from the partners; no release date, independent performance study, or broad customer results were disclosed.
