Volantis announced an $88 million Series A co-led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures, with participation including John Doerr, VXI Capital, Triatomic and Susa Ventures. Its company post is dated September 29; the distributed release is dated October 1. These are two accounts of the same financing.

Capital for an unproven hardware architecture

The company is developing optical connections between compute and pooled memory. It plans initial customer inference engines in 2027. Its A-1 goals—models exceeding 20 trillion parameters and up to 10,000 tokens per second per user—are engineering targets, not demonstrated production performance.

Reuters corroborates the financing and planned chip development. The round matters because it funds an alternative approach to AI's memory bottleneck; commercial delivery, economics and performance remain unverified.
