Boston Dynamics has opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center inside Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia, to train and test Atlas humanoid robots on automotive-manufacturing tasks.
Atlas is training on parts sequencing
The company says Atlas robots are handling real automotive parts, learning logistics and sequencing work before components reach an assembly line. The Robot Report says training uses teleoperation, simulation reinforcement learning and Universal Manipulation Interface devices.
The center is operational, but scale-up is planned
Boston Dynamics says the first RMAC phase is operating now and is expected to move into a building roughly ten times larger in 2027. Component-assembly applications are targeted for 2030.
Large deployment numbers remain forward-looking
Hyundai plans to begin deploying 25,000 Atlas units across Hyundai and Kia plants over the next several years and establish U.S. production capacity for 30,000 robots annually. Those figures are plans rather than verified installations, and Boston Dynamics has not published independent productivity or safety results from RMAC.
