Cohere has opened a Series E financing round targeting up to C$7 billion and says it has completed an initial close. The company did not disclose how much capital was included in that first close, so the round’s target should not be read as cash already received.
The company says the targeted round would value it at C$35.7 billion. Schwarz Group is leading the financing, with new participation from Bell Ventures, Bullhound Capital and the Government of Canada, while Inovia Capital, NVIDIA and Prosperity7 Ventures are returning investors.
Canada announced a separate commitment to invest up to approximately C$1.6 billion in stages. The government describes that as a commercial equity investment, not a grant. Cohere committed to create at least 1,000 Canadian technical jobs and spend at least C$1.7 billion on additional Canadian computing infrastructure by 2030, while retaining its Canadian incorporation and headquarters.
Cohere says the capital will support more capable models, products for regulated industries and sovereign compute capacity. The financing follows its combination with Germany’s Aleph Alpha and gives the round a cross-border infrastructure and sovereignty dimension beyond ordinary growth capital.
The distinction between target, initial close and government commitment matters: the target is the maximum sought, the valuation is the proposed company value, and Canada’s staged commitment depends on future execution and reporting.
